Privacy policy
Last updated: 4 October 2026
This policy explains what personal information the Hush Crush app collects, why, who it's shared with, and your rights. We've written it in plain English. If anything is unclear, email hello@hushcrush.co.uk.
Who we are
Hush Crush is run by [Your full name], a sole trader based in the United Kingdom, trading as Hush Crush ("we", "us"). We are the "data controller" for your information under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
Contact: hello@hushcrush.co.uk · Postal address: [Your business or PO Box address]
Hush Crush is for over 18s only
You must be 18 or over to use Hush Crush. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account, we delete it.
What we collect and why
| Information | Why we use it | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| An anonymous account ID created when you open the app | To keep your account and messages linked to you | Contract (providing the app) |
| Your display name, and whether you're here for friends, dating or both | Shown to people you message or match with, and used for your badge colour | Contract |
| Your confirmation that you're over 18 | To keep the app adults-only | Legal obligation and legitimate interests (safety) |
| Your headshot (optional) | Sent with your messages so people can recognise you. It's automatically cropped to your face and made small before it's saved | Consent: you choose to add it, and can remove it any time |
| Venue check-ins: which venue and night, your number for that night, and the time | To give you a number for the night and let people message you | Contract |
| Messages, replies and chats | To deliver them to the person you're talking to, and to filter out abusive language | Contract and legitimate interests (safety) |
| Voice calls | To connect calls between matches. We don't record calls; we only keep a note that a call is ringing or in progress | Contract |
| Blocks and reports, and the messages they relate to | To keep people safe and investigate problems | Legitimate interests (safety) and legal obligation |
| A notification token for your phone | To send you notifications about new messages, matches and calls | Contract |
| Your sign-up date | To count how many people use Hush Crush | Legitimate interests (running the business) |
Choosing "dating" may suggest things about your personal life. We only use it to show your badge colour and to help people understand why you're out, and we never use it for advertising.
We don't collect your phone number, email address, contacts or precise location, and we don't sell your information.
Who we share it with
- Other Hush Crush users: only what's needed. People you message see your name, number for the night, friends/dating choice, the venue, your message and your headshot if you added one. Your phone number is never shared.
- Google (Firebase): stores the app's data and runs our servers. Our data is stored in Google's London region.
- Agora: connects in-app voice calls. Call audio passes through their network but isn't recorded by us.
- The police or authorities: only if the law requires it, or to protect someone from serious harm.
Some of these providers may process data outside the UK. When they do, they use safeguards approved under UK law, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.
How long we keep it
- Your past venues ("My events") are cleared after 7 days.
- Messages, matches and chats are kept while your account is open, so your chat history works.
- Reports and blocks may be kept for up to 2 years for safety reasons, even if an account is deleted.
- When you delete your account, we delete your profile, headshot and messages within 30 days.
Deleting your account
To delete your Hush Crush account and data, email hello@hushcrush.co.uk with the subject "Delete my account" and the display name on your account. We'll confirm when it's done, within 30 days. You can remove your headshot yourself at any time on the app's Home page.
Your rights
Under UK law you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of your information;
- correct anything that's wrong;
- delete your information;
- stop or limit how we use it, or object to how we use it;
- move your information to another service.
Where we rely on your consent (your headshot), you can withdraw it at any time by removing the photo. Email us to use any of your rights; we'll reply within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We'd appreciate the chance to sort it out first.
Keeping it secure
Your information is stored on Google's secure servers and protected in transit. Only the app's own server can read or change messages and check-ins; other users can't access them directly. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.
Changes to this policy
If we make important changes, we'll tell you in the app before they take effect. The date at the top shows when this policy was last updated.
